When is Dhul Hijjah 2026?

This year, Dhul Hijjah will begin around 18th May and end around 15th June, dependent on the moon sighting. So, the first ten days will be from 18th-28th May, dependent on the moon.

The Prophet (saw) said, 鈥楾here are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than in these (ten) days鈥� [Abu Dawud].

For those of us lucky enough to join the pilgrimage to Makkah, the most pressing worry we have for the trip is: will my Hajj be accepted? With that in mind, we鈥檝e put together all the rules of Hajj (and 鈥橴mrah) into a simple guide to ensure you perform this spiritual obligation correctly.

Please note that the below is a list of steps for Hajj Tamattu', the Hajj which most pilgrims perform, where they end their Ihram after the first Sa鈥檈e and then resume it on the 8th of Dhul Hijjah.

This article is part two of the Hajj guide, which begins on 8th Dhul Hijjah, when pilgrims travel to Mina. Please read part one for details of how to perform 鈥橴mrah, beginning when you enter into Ihram before arriving in Makkah.

Without further ado, let鈥檚 begin!

Step Six - Ihram and Mina

On 8th Dhul Hijjah, before travelling to Mina, you must resume your Ihram again at your hotels (read our step-by-step guide on Ihram) and make the intention for Hajj, Allahumma labayka Hajja (see du'a in Arabic).Throughout the day, you must also recite the Talbiyah now and then:

Go to Mina before Dhuhr (midday), and stay there until after Fajr on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah. While in Mina, you will shorten your Dhuhr, 鈥橝sr and 鈥橧sha prayers into two rakats, but don鈥檛 combine any of the prayers.

You will leave Mina after sunrise on 9th Dhul Hijjah.

Step Seven - Arafat

The Day of Arafah is the most important day of the year, even if you are not performing Hajj, and for that reason we have written a separate article about the blessings of Arafah.

What do you do at Arafat?

• In Arafat, on 9th Dhul Hijjah, you will pray Dhuhr and Asr (combining and shortening the prayers), preferably in congregation.
• Make as much du鈥檃 and repentance as you can, facing the Qiblah and raising your hands. The best du鈥檃 to make on the day of Arafat is this one:

La ilaha ill-allah, wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, wa huwa 鈥榓la kulli shai'in qadir.

The Prophet (saw) said, 鈥楾he best鈥痵upplication is the supplication of the鈥疍ay of 鈥楢rafah. and the best of what I and the Prophets before me have said is, "There is no God but Allah, alone,鈥痺ithout partner, to Him belongs the鈥� kingdom, and to Him belongs all praise,鈥� and He is powerful over all things鈥濃��.

• After sunset, leave Arafat and go to Muzdalifah. Continue reciting the Talbiyah.

Step Eight - Muzdalifah

What do you do at Muzdalifah?

• At Muzdalifah, combine your Maghrib and 鈥橧sha prayers (shortening the 鈥橧sha prayer).
• Pick seven small stones from Muzdalifah for stoning the Large Jamarah (pillar) tomorrow.
• On waking up, pray Fajr as early as possible.
• After Fajr, it is recommended to make du鈥檃 standing and facing the Qiblah with your hands raised, until the morning light is widespread.
• Leave Muzdalifah to go to Mina a little before sunrise.

Step Nine - Jamarat and Qurbani

• At Mina, throw stones at the Large Jamarah only, one at a time.
• Say Allahu Akbar each time you throw a stone.
• After the stoning, an animal will be sacrificed in your name. The deadline for Qurbani is sunset on 13th Dhul Hijjah. You will usually receive a text when your Qurbani is done.
• After Qurbani, men must cut or shave their hair; women must cut a fingertip鈥檚 length of hair. Men must resume wearing normal clothes.

Step Nine - The Days of Tashreeq

11th -13th Dhul Hijjah are known as the Days of Tashreeq, and it is recommended to recite the Eid Takbeer throughout these days.

What do you do in the Days of Tashreeq?

• Go to Makkah and perform Tawaf Al-Ifadah - circling the Ka鈥檅ah seven times, praying at Maqam Ibrahim and drinking Zamzam water from the well of Zamzam.
• Perform Sa'ee just as you did earlier on.
• Return to Mina and spend the night. You can stay in Mina for either two or three days (until the 12th or 13th of Dhul Hijjah). You must collect 21 stones for each day you stone the Jamarat.
• Stone the three Jamarat each day after midday (you may want to wait until Asr time, when it is cooler).
• If you are leaving on 12th Dhul Hijjah, you must stone the Jamarat after midday; if you cannot, you must stay one more night and stone them on the 13th before leaving.

Finally, you have one last step - to perform the Tawaf Al-Wida鈥�, the Farewell Tawaf. This simply means circling the Ka鈥檅ah for the last time before leaving Makkah. This should be your final action before leaving Makkah.

You have now completed Hajj.
