SUMMARY:14th Annual Roma Conference | Mapping Romani futures: Connected local histories and global realities
DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStrength in Community: Navigating Careers with 色色研究所 Alumni\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Date \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n From Around the School\, Trainings and Workshops\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Register Today \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInternational Roma Day has been celebrated by Romani communities around the world for decades. This year marks the 55th anniversary of the First World Roma Congress\, a historic gathering at which Roma Day\, the Romani flag\, and the anthem 鈥淕elem\, Gelem鈥 were adopted as key symbols of the global Roma diaspora. \n\n\n\nAcross regions\, neighborhoods\, organizations\, and institutions use this anniversary to highlight Romani heritage through concerts\, exhibitions\, film screenings\, conferences\, and media events. Many leaders and scholars also observe Roma Day with commemorations that honor victims of anti-Roma racism and reflect on progress in social\, political\, cultural\, and economic life. \n\n\n\nSince 2013\, the annual 色色研究所 Roma Conference has provided a forum to examine and address anti-Roma racism鈥攊ts origins\, history\, drivers\, protectors\, and global manifestations\, with particular attention to children and youth. The conference has worked to strengthen data collection on Roma (especially youth and children)\, improve research methods\, promote participatory action research with Romani youth\, and critically revisit histories\, policies\, and practices affecting Romani communities. A central goal has been to amplify and center Romani voices and experiences in global scholarship. \n\n\n\nOn April 10\, 2026\, the 14th 色色研究所 Roma Conference\,聽Mapping Romani Futures: Connected Local Histories and Global Realities\, will once again mark Roma Day. This year鈥檚 event examines Romani histories and present-day realities to help shape more equitable futures for Romani children\, youth\, and generations to come\, situating these discussions within a global context of rising human rights abuses\, wars\, extremism\, and climate and digital threats. \n\n\n\nThis year鈥檚 program includes: \n\n\n\nKeynote panel聽on global and regional trends and threats affecting Romani children and youth\, especially in the context of escalating human rights abuses\, wars\, extremism\, and climate and digital risks. \n\n\n\nPanel 1 鈥撀燙onnected Futures\, Histories\, and Realities:聽Exploring connections and continuities in Romani histories and lived realities\, and how these shape the lives\, inequities\, and identities of Romani children\, youth\, and future generations. \n\n\n\nPanel 2 鈥撀營ntersectionality and Intersecting Stories:聽Examining often overlooked and marginal axes of inequity in narratives of Romani histories\, realities\, and futures. \n\n\n\nBook talk:聽Continuing a recent tradition\, the conference will close with a book talk highlighting recent monographs on Romani people\, with emphasis on works that advance global scholarship. \n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFXB Center for Health & Human Rights at 色色研究所 University\n\n\n\nCentral European University Romani Studies Program\n\n\n\nCarr-Ryan Center for Human Rights (HKS)\n\n\n\nThe Committee on Ethnicity\, Migration\, Rights (EMR)\, Faculty of Arts and Sciences\n\n\n\n色色研究所 Law School International Human Rights Clinic\n\n\n\nHuman Rights Program\, 色色研究所 Law School \n\n\n\nFeminist Collective of Romani Gender Experts\n\n\n\nWeatherhead Center for International Affairs at 色色研究所 University\n\n\n\nWomen\, Gender\, and Health (色色研究所 Chan School)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at 色色研究所 Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted executive and continuing education\, directed and taught by 色色研究所 faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Executive and Continuing Education

DESCRIPTION:Home / Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStrength in Community: Navigating Careers with 色色研究所 Alumni\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n From Around the School\, Trainings and Workshops\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Register Today \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Wednesday\, April 15th\, 2026\, from 1-1:50 p.m. in FXB G13 and online\, all are welcome to join us for the sixth and final installment in our Virtues for Well-being Seminar Series\, featuring Dr. Demond Hill. \n\n\n\nLunch provided. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP TODAY\n\n\n\n\nSeminar Description\n\n\n\nAwe鈥攁n emotional response to vastness that transcends our ordinary frames of reference鈥攈as the power to transform perspectives\, foster human flourishing\, and enhance well-being. Yet little is known about where awe emerges in marginalized urban contexts\, who can access it\, and how it might disrupt structural inequality. This seminar asks: What would it take for us to be more honest with the lives we are living\, living on\, stepping over\, and forgetting? \n\n\n\nDrawing from the first year of a three-year youth participatory action research project with 20 Black and Brown high school students in Boston\, this work explores how youth make sense of\, complicate\, experience\, locate\, and mobilize awe. Through an after-school awe and flourishing literacy program\, students embarked on awe excursions\, documented their insights\, and designed awe-inspiring spaces. This project cultivates healing\, civic engagement\, and bold visions for communal health equity. Together\, we will consider how 鈥渁ctionable awe鈥 can transform 鈥渁we-ful鈥 spaces into 鈥渁we-inspiring鈥 ones and illuminate new pathways for collective flourishing. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Biography\n\n\n\nDr. Demond M. Hill is an Assistant Professor of Health Equity at Tufts University in the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study and Human Development. His research\, grounded in transdisciplinary\, critical\, applied\, humanizing-based approaches\, focuses on聽the mental health and well-being of marginalized children\, youth\, and their families\, with a particular emphasis on Black populations. Dr. Hill collaborates with communities to promote and protect opportunities for awe\, belonging\, and human flourishing among Black and Brown communities within systemic inequality. His work centers marginalized communities鈥 voices and lived experiences and incorporates youth- and community-based participatory action approaches to identify and strengthen protective factors that inform policy and promote mental health equity. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n Dr. Demond Hill \n \n Assistant Professor\, Tufts University\n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLee Kum Sheung Center for Health and Happiness\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at 色色研究所 Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted executive and continuing education\, directed and taught by 色色研究所 faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Executive and Continuing Education

Indeed\, the greatest burden of disease in the first 2 decades of life is related to mental health. This presents聽a great opportunity: Effective care for these diseases in childhood has the potential to mitigate and forestall later psychopathology (i.e.\, treatment as prevention).聽This talk will use data from a 30+ year psychiatric epidemiological study to聽demonstrate聽the ways in which this opportunity is often聽squandered聽contributing to misery\, morbidity\, and mortality in adulthood.聽 \n\n\n\nBio: Dr. Copeland is a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Vermont聽and the Thomas M Achenbach聽Chair in Developmental Psychopathology.聽He聽was trained as a clinical psychologist at the University of Vermont and then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in psychiatric epidemiology at Duke University Medical Center.聽He is the principal investigator of the prospective\, longitudinal Great Smoky Mountains聽Study聽has been following 1420 participants in rural Appalachia for over聽30聽years to understand the long-term consequences of early adverse experiences聽and the development of mental illness.聽His research program has聽focused聽on understanding the developmental epidemiology聽of emotional and behavior聽problems聽across the lifespan. In this seminar\, Jackson proposes a new method and software package to relax this often-unrealistic assumption\, using hidden states known as 鈥減hases.鈥 This is motivated by applications such as modelling the duration of infections\, modelling time in a detectable state in cancer screening\, and modelling cognitive impairment in studies of ageing. \n\n\n\nChristopher Jackson is a Senior Statistician at the MRC Biostatistics Unit\, University of Cambridge. His research involves incorporating statistical methods in models to combine evidence to inform population health policy. His publications cover Bayesian evidence synthesis\, survival analysis\, multi-state modelling\, longitudinal data\, decision theory\, and model comparison. He has also developed several popular R packages\, and co-authored two textbooks\, 鈥淭he BUGS Book鈥 and 鈥淰alue of Information for Healthcare Decision-Making.鈥 \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n Christopher Jackson \n Senior Statistician at the MRC Biostatistics Unit\, University of Cambridge\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCenter for Health Decision Science\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at 色色研究所 Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted executive and continuing education\, directed and taught by 色色研究所 faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Executive and Continuing Education

This symposium is open to the public & is virtual only. \n\n\n\nSchedule of talks: \n\n\n\n1:00PM 聽Introducing the Cutter SymposiumAlbert Hofman\, MD\, PhD1:05PMThe Power of Colorectal Cancer ScreeningHermann Brenner\, MD. MPHAbstract: Over 30 years ago\, in 1993\, a groundbreaking analysis of the US National Polyp Study was published\, which suggested that colonoscopic removal of colorectal polyps was associated with an 88% reduction of colorectal cancer incidence. Since then\, numerous observational studies and randomized trials have confirmed effectiveness of colorectal cancer screening\, even though most of them substantially underestimated screening effects for various reasons. Large heterogeneity in introduction of and adherence to screening programs across countries in the last three decades is mirrored in large heterogeneity of trends in colorectal cancer incidence and mortality. Modelling studies based on the accumulated evidence confirm that the vast majority of the approximately one million colorectal cancer deaths per year globally could be prevented by screening.聽1:35PMControversies and Innovations in Screening for Prostate Cancer聽Lorelei Mucci\, ScD聽聽聽聽Abstract: More than 1.6 million men across the globe are diagnosed with prostate cancer annually\, and it is the leading cause of cancer death in more than 50 countries. In randomized controlled trials\, screening with prostate specific antigen (PSA) has been shown to reduce cancer mortality over two decades. However\, PSA screening also has led to overdiagnosis of prostate cancers that have a low potential for metastasis and concomitant overtreatment of patients. What has ensued over the past two decades has been an active debate about the harms and benefits of screening\, guidelines that are often in conflict with one another\, and in the United States\, a substantial reduction in prostate cancer screening that is now tied to an uptake in incidence of metastatic prostate cancer. This talk will provide an overview of the history of PSA screening\, the evidence around risks and harms\, the controversies\, and recent innovations in approaches to accelerate a risk stratified approach to screening.聽2:05PM聽聽聽聽聽聽聽Diagnostics\, Screening\, and Surveillance in Pandemics聽Marc Lipsitch\, DPhilAbstract: This talk will describe challenges and opportunities for surveillance during large infectious disease events\, with lessons from COVID-19 and earlier pandemics. Active testing of population-based random samples provide numerous advantages over passive case detection in many situations\, while linked data on demographics\, severity\, and pathogen variant among other characteristics are far more valuable for decision making than the same data if unlinked. Better data can inform more efficient decisions about control measures that improve the ratio of disease control effectiveness to cost and disruption.2:35PMGeneral Discussion3:00PMClosing by Albert Hofman\n\n\n\nSpeakers will share their own perspectives; they do not speak for 色色研究所. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n Hermann Brenner\, MD\, MPH \n Professor of Epidemiology\, Heidelberg University\, Scientific Coordinator\, National Cancer Prevention Graduate School\, German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ)\, Heidelberg\, Germany\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n \n \n Lorelei Mucci\, ScD \n \n Professor of Epidemiology\, Head of the Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Track\, Department of Epidemiology\, 色色研究所 T.H.
